CLIMATE CHANGE

By and large we all know the countries that have been responsible for global warming and other disastrous environmental calamities that we have faced, are facing now and will be dealing with in the future. Despite that, these countries have been the slowest to come up with solutions to combat the issue. As a citizen of a developing nation in Africa (which contributes negligibly and yet bears the brunt of climate change) I believe that we should not have to pay as dearly as the developed world to fix the problem.

ONLINE DISPUTE RESOLUTION

I think dispute resolution will be a sure way of freeing up the massive backlogs we face in our court systems here in Kenya (and in Africa as a whole). I think the government’s recent initiatives to decentralize the hearing / filing court cases (whether industrial, commercial,, private etc) is a good move. I am aware of one Dispute Resolution Center operating in Nairobi, are there any others? Online dispute resolution also seems to be growing worldwide, this could be an additional solution.

FOR ALL ANTI-CORRPUTION CRUSADERS

Hi- I saw an interesting article in this weeks East African (march 26) about how Wikipedia and a few other web sites allow you to post and view (anonymously) evidence of graft. I think this is a great resource especially here in Africa where all to often, access to government document transactions are opaque. Here is the list

Oxfam slams bilateral trade deals

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6472125.stm

in response to the blogger that had concerns about Chinese loans, look at what Oxfam has to say about the WTO and bilateral trade deals between developed and developing nations, it seems that either way developing nations are the losers!

genetically engineered mosquitos!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6468381.stm

this story was on BBC news today, i guess it sounds like a good idea, but what happens if the mosquitos dont outnumber the ones that are 'infected with malaria', i guess the reasoning is sound, that the malaria mosquitos will die out in favor of these GM ones, but aren't mosquitos able to mutate, so that the malaria virus doesnt affect them? is that not why they have survived all these eons ? in which case this experiment would be useless..
